Just found it, it's a 8139 based NIC *but* stock 8139 software does not work with it, they must have used custom IDs and strings that the RTL SDK allows. on my system I can play wolf3d just fine with DOS from 98SE (not dos under 98se but boot in dos mode) and I have 128MB installed. No issues whatsoever.
