You will hear "machine noise" either way with LPT DACs, just like a radio that also has some hissing in it - the output by nature is not crystal clear like a real soundcard. But yeah, the retrocables adapter is not as good as dreamblaster's one.

Use another soundcard for DOS, the PCI SBLive! is not good for it. Use an ISA one else you are just asking for errors and trouble. Also Gods needs a 2nd revision MT-32 (or LAPC-I or CM-32L or similar) to sound correctly.

Ah, you were the 2nd person watching the card 😁 glad it was someone from here that got it! The card looks well build too . Btw the seller is very helpful in requests, I was amazed by that since most recyclers don't bother with questions

I have a 10GB partition with win2000 on my p233mmx build - the only reason I have this is so I can write CPC 3.5" disks with CPCDiskXP. I found it amazing that ESS provided drivers even for the older ES488 card while Creative only supported SB16/AWE series and upwards. My build now has a CT1600 + …

I will check the directory listing speed - I just use a lotech cf adapter with a 256MB cf for testing/benchmarks so it's always kinda slow... maybe CheckIt uses BIOS functions for the VGA speed test?

Yep that's the Bios of my 286 board... It's one of the later 286/16 with Headland chipset If you notice the landmark chrs/ms results there is no difference with shadowing options - and this is a text-mode benchmark as far as I can tell. Maybe the bios option doesn't do anything 🤣
