On-device programming would be cool but tbh I don't think it worths the time if the effort is big... I don't remember how ram works on this GUS model , does one have the option to instruct the GUS to use the ram samples instead of the rom ones? If yes then there is no point having anything else …

My brother had one of these shuttle pcs... After a couple of years of usage it had random problems and after a while it was just unreliable for any kind of work... I believe it's the heat that kills them. He binned it 🤣

I see... btw, how big is the original rom? is it 512kbyte or 1mbyte? How did they arrange the data? (judging from the compatible 29F800 part)

why does it create a 16mbyte file for the rom data? or is it 16mbit?

it could be just a case of multi-layered pcb, maybe there is another layer inside that is not visible

could also worth your time tracing and testing with a multimeter the 8 pins, maybe along the way something broke and the eeprom is ok

Under the empty crystall space on the pcb (upper left) there is a ram chip and on it's right an 8-pin device... What is it? Also what is the large IC above the bios eproms? The pic is too small 😵 There is no other place/ic that I can see that could be an eeprom...

Diagnose will "see" the mpu at port330 and will think it's the AWE that is responding... Make a test at port300 , does the AWE midi-out work? Maybe there is something else to run too sto that AWE is configured at port300? Changing the value on autoexec.bat alone might not be enough

Most likely both AWE32 and MPU have the same midi port configured: 330 and this creates a conflict Make AWE32 use port 300 and try again

Under pure DOS + pentium2+ systems you need a special utility to speed up graphics performance, try one of the 3 linked here: http://www.mdgx.com/umb.htm#FAS You don't need any kind of VESA driver for the riva128 cards, they already have a VBE3.0 bios 😎
