Liquid nitrogen is mainly done for competitive benchmarking, and usually only in short stints, by people who don't care if they destroy their hardware in the pursuit of higher benchmark scores. You'd have to be a masochist to run a machine on liquid nitrogen daily 😜

dirkmirk is a user here and has successfully run Win 95 on his 386DX40, could try asking him. I believe he has 64MB of RAM though.

^ uh yeah I'm pretty sure 'some guy' is RFNAngel, a member here 😜 😀 but yeah I have that same daughterboard and an SC55 and I personally think that daughterboard sounds better- in GM mode at least. The SC55 supports GS mode but I don't know of any games that support GS or XG.

I'm going to resist the urge to make a fart joke, but what exactly are ASS timbres? 🤣 So is the 1.2 version using OPL3 and 1.3 using OPL2? Or are they using some sort of different 'library' or 'bank' of FM synth timbres? I've always wondered what the reasons for the change was.

Command and Conquer had excellent music, but it was digital Red Book audio playing off the CD. Return to Zork was another one with some good tunes, it had both red book audio and synth, supported adlib FM and MT32/GM. not sure why they only recorded enough digital music for about half the game and …

My GUS classic doesn't have this problem, so I'd wager that a previous owner has been a little rough with inserting/removing cables and has loosened the connector a bit. It shouldn't be a major problem to remove the jack and solder on a new one if you were so inclined.

I actually enjoyed fiddling with the computer and making stubborn DOS games work. v:)v Fiddling with the sound setup is usually the first thing I tried. Some games could be a bit temperamental about their sound config.

In my experience the difference between 128kb and 256kb of L2 cache is minimal and not really noticable. You are generally better off with smaller, faster cache (lower wait states etc) then bigger, slower cache. And yes that 256MB of RAM is definitely going to give a bigger performance hit on a …

I have no idea what the Speedsys score is meant to represent but Norton Sysinfo's CPU score is normalized to a 4.77MHz 8088. My 386DX-40 scores about 40 in that. If I hit tthe turbo button that goes down to 8.
