The 1542CF uses a centronics connector, and the 1542CP uses the HD50 connector. Other than that, I believe they are pretty much the same.

The board should go up to 256MB and 1MB cache. I am pretty sure I tested both.

Maybe at one point 8kx8 was the largest available density. Or, maybe the board was a custom job for an OEM trying to get rid of excess supply.

Both boards appear to have shortcomings. The top board is interesting because it uses a Forex chipset I've never seen before on a 386 board...single chip. That could be a pretty fast chipset. Unfortunately, the board only has 4 SIMM slots and only up to 128kb L2 cache. The lower board has many …

This board would be pretty slick with the SXLC2. I used to own this board, and was planning to swap the 386SX-40 for an SXLC-40, but sold the board before I got around to it.

I would guess if you wanted to run the CPU at 40MHz, you could just change the crystal oscillator for an 80MHz part. AMD had pretty good yields on their 386s, so I would guess most run at 40 regardless of the markings. The fact that it's on a late model board only helps your case.

MRBIOS is chipset dependent, so your slc bios won’t work in a dx/dlc board. I’m pretty sure mr bios for opti495 and Ali 1429 are both available on a Russian bios site.

Overall you can get a small speedup of maybe 1-2%, because MR-BIOS appears to manage system timings more efficiently. It's also better at detecting CPUs, and sometimes adds modern features like Y2K and LBA support.

The BIOS for OPTI495 is readily available in both AMI or MRBIOS. However, I think it would be nice to have a copy of that MR-BIOS for OPTI 391.

So is the software a TSR or a driver? As far as I know drivers take up some memory, while TSRs do not.

I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure all VGA Wonder + cards have either 256k or 512k DRAM. If your card has 1MB, then I am pretty sure it's a different model.
