If there is not a jumper to disable the onboard CPU, chances are it would have to be sliced off in order to take advantage of the PGA socket. Usually they leave the PGA socket off the board if the PQFP cpu is present, but sometimes they make mistakes and give you extra parts you can't use.

As far as I can remember it was just the MMX chips that were locked (and some of them may not be). I'm more of a 486 guy though, so my information may not be solid.

I agree with the bad monitor power supply theory. I had something similar happen, and I changed a few capacitors...now it's fine. Sometimes if you're lucky there will be a guide for your monitor on the fixit type websites that show you which ones to replace.

At least from what I remember, 386 motherboards supporting more than 64 or 128kb cache were relatively uncommon, unless of course you are talking about 386 boards that use 486 chipsets.

I agree with all your worst FPS choices except for the original DOOM. It is blocky, but I find the graphics quite beautiful compared to DOOM 2.
