Speedsys apparently isn't a very accurate tool for measuring CPU speed on older systems. The DOOM result is probably more useful for performance comparison.

Should be possible. I have been considering to attempt this on a 25MHz 386SX board as well (yes, you should use a 5V part, unless you have a laptop with a low voltage CPU). That 386 board looks like a pretty old one. Look how many chips there are in the "chipset". More than likely it's a 286 chipset with a 386 bolted on. The chipset has 25MHz stamped into it, which likely means going faster than that is risky. Most importantly, there is no external cache, which will …

Who told you that any MFM/RLL drive would work with any controller? In my experience that is not true. You may be able to get away formatting your 40MB drive as 30MB with the current card. Maybe it's possible to even use a software dynamic overlay to use the full capacity. I've only ever tried …

I only use buckling spring keyboards on my vintage PCs. I have a Model F on my PC and AT, an XT model M on my XT, and everything else uses PS/2 model Ms. I had a black one with the track point for a while, but I felt it was inferior to the ones from the 80s so I sold it.

I am pretty sure the MFM controller you want for larger drives is the WD 1002A-WX1. I ran that drive with dual ST 251s formatted to 40MB. I think it could handle larger ones though. The A in the model name is important. The 1002-WX1 only does 20MB. What's the 1004A-WX1 all about? The model name …

If you didn't change the crystal oscillator or the clock gen when swapping CPUs, then yes, you were overclocking the CPU.
