Doens't DR-DOS come with "EMM286"? That should help you get some UMB memory (if it's available). It should be possible to get most of your 640kb back. Even on an XT, I can get about 620kb. I had an almost identical setup back in 2001. I ended up sticking with Windows 2000 because of the memory requirements for Eckspee.

There's not much to know really. It's pretty much like Vesa Local Bus, but it has a different connector. It slightly predates VLB, but it failed and therefore not many cards were made for it.

Yeah, you had to go HX if you wanted to use a lot of memory. Most HX motherboards should support 512MB, but still most TX boards and some VX boards will do 256.

My favourite part about the K6+ chips is that it gets around the only real limitations of the VX and TX chipsets: 64mb caching limit. The K6+ will cache as much memory as your motherboard can handle. I my opinion 100MHz FSB and AGP don't add much value to the socket7 platform.

I have a Hercules Terminator 64 DRAM VLB based on Trio64 that also has funny colours *sometimes*. I assumed it was bad memory, but maybe the IC is bad somehow. It was the first S3 product with an integrated RAMDAC, so who knows.

Is that BIOS original? I don't see too many 386s with holographic stickers on the BIOS chip. You should use a multimeter and check all the tantalum capacitors for closed circuits.
