I also "read only" autoexec.bat because oplsax changes the SET BLASTER variable after every tweak. Are you referring to how setupsa leaves an extra space in between two variables in the SET BLASTER line? I'm still not certain if it messes things up, but it sure annoys me.

I have a 10mhz v30, and the benchmarks I ran put it in the same league as a 10MHz 286. The Sierra games I threw at it denitely felt like AT speed. There is a pretty big speed jump from 8088 to 8086. I want to say about 50% faster.

If you go for a DX4-100, then Intel is a safe bet, because they all have 16KB write-back cache, the best possible configuration. With AMD, there's both 8KB and 16KB variations. Cyrix Fasmath is tecnically the fastest, but the intel 387 really isn't that bad. Intel updated the 387 core in the 33MHz model with enhancements similar to Cyrix, IIT and ULSI. You shouldn't have to use a dremel to remove the Dallas chip. Just get a pair of angled cuticle clippers, and clip each pin one at a time. Then you can use a soldering iron and a pair of needle nosed pliers to remove the stubs. Solder in a socket.
