Since it doesn't have the VLB slot, it's not terribly interesting as a hybrid system. It would probably work better as a 386. As it was a budget board, at best it would be a low end 486...which really needs a 32-bit bus for video anyway.

Yes, a W24256 exists. I looked at the datasheet this morning. It exists in -35ns and -15ns parts. Datasheets for both the W24256 and W24257 appear to be identical, except that the 257 is available with better access speeds. There is no mention of any integrated dirty bit.

Isn't a DLC-40 supposed to be about equal to a 486SX-33? If that's the case, Doom should run okay. Now if you had a 486SLC, that would be another story...

I don't specifically recall how compatible headland is. ATi apparently has just so-so compatibility according to people who tested cards...but I used VGA Wonder, Mach8, Mach32 and Mach64 in DOS for years and don't recall having trouble.

Any VLB will be fastest than the fastest ISA card...with the exception of maybe matrox or weitek stuff.

The ET4000AX should have supported local buses natively. No comment on the adaptec chip on the SCSI card....surely it had to have been better in some ways though. edit: I see ET4000AX only has a 16-bit host interface. It should still see a big boost due to running at local bus speeds though (33MHz) …
