It must have been pretty embarrassing for intel to admit that their brand new (and very expensive) 32-bit CPU could only run 16-bit code. Although everybody likes to talk about FDIV, this was a far bigger F@#% up in my opinion.

Please post a high resolution picture of your FU3 motherboard. I should really try setting my external cache as 64kb to see if the BIOS will pick it up. I remember Feipoa had issues getting 256kb cache to work on his FU340 with AMI BIOS.

If the 8087 has a later date code it will probably overclock. Just be aware that all 8087s were based on 3 micron NMOS designs. Because of the way the 8087 is interfaced to the 8086/8, if your FPU overheats it will crash the CPU too. 8087 is probably one of the worst chips you can overclock. I don't …

It's not just AMIKEY-2 that supports the PS/2 mouse. Just about every 8042 I've seen made after 1990 seems to support it.

The size of the cache gives absolutely no indication how much memory the board supports. That totally depends on what the chipset and BIOS can handle. The majority of 486 boards with 30-pin SIMM slots can accept up to 32MB using eight 4MB SIMMs. The ones that can take 16MB SIMMs are in the minority. …

The best part of this system is the keylock with the matching key. I guess those were still kind of around during the mid 90s, but rarely in OEM builds.

In my experience it's pretty hard to get Cyrix 5x86 chips to POST at 5V. I have 5 or 6 of these chips, and I don't think any of them would do it. 150MHz on a Cyrix 5x86 is not realistic at any voltage with L1 cache enabled. 133MHz is pretty much the best you can ever hope for with this chip.
