Oldest motherboards I have seen with flashable roms are 486s. One or two with VLB.

It's not like the pipelined stuff most socket 7 boards use, nor is it the format that the PC CHIPS M919 uses. The slot is shorter and deeper.

The Mach64 series (including some early Rage/Rage Pro) have Windows 3.1 drivers, if you wanted to build some sort of super insane 486 system with PCI.

I may be wrong, but it seems to me what you have to do to get a PNP Crative card with an IDE (and make sure it is an IDE, and not (Sony/Panasonic/Mitsumi) to work is load the Creative drivers FIRST and then load MSCDEX (or whatever it is called) and it should detect whatever is there. Sometimes, we have gems in a drawer or on a shelf that we dismiss out of hand at first as being worthless or uninteresting until we come across it again for a second look. Mine was a ATI VGA Wonder+ card with analog 15pin VGA -AND- 9 pin TTL out. (unconfirmed as of yet though) What was yours?
