I remember using Xing software with a 486/66, but that was when mp3 was still fairly unknown and I don't remember the quality. The key was the software: some decoders were more optimized and worked better on low end machines.

Haven't I seen a closed thread about this topic? I guess the main difference is that Win32s is an official add-on by Microsoft, while DX10 for XP is a hacked thing. I don't know where is placed KernelEx (another hack? I'm sure that it is not official), but the moderators chose to close that older XP …

If you're going to use C, both Watcom and DJGPP compilers should deal with the extender thing. You won't have to do anything special to use it.

LeechFTP as client, 3COM FTP server as server. Both should work fine on Windows 95 (maybe you'll need Winsocks update) and are easy to configure. There can be security issues, but the entire Windows 95 is a security issue.

Also try to remove everything connected to MB except the CPU and the beeper. A MB with CPU but no RAM should beep like crazy. On some drives, if you use the 720k switch but the hole is uncovered the floppy will be formatted at 9 sectors per track on high density. You won't know until you try the disk on a DD drive or a computer that does not support HD.

NES (NESticle}, ZX Spectrum (x128, Warajevo)... most 8 bits stuff will work if you use older emulators. Modern (cycle acurate) emulators will need faster computers (did anyone said 300 MHz?).

In this page says that only the latest BIOS (11/15/85) supports 1.44 Mb floppy drive. If your BIOS is earlier, you should replace it. Keep the old BIOS at hand, it seems that newer BIOS were for newer boards... I don't know if you really can retrofit newer BIOS to older boards.

I've looked into the interview... I usually don't use Dosbox too much (not enough time, and most games I've played are VGA games), but it seems interesting that John Romero complains about EGA scrolling. It's that an issue solved in WIP versions?
