Re: Emulate joystick for TIE Fighter

in Windows
Using Windows 7 x64? It seems that Windows 7 won't load any unsigned driver, and drivers from ppjoy are unsigned. The author claims that he won't pay the certification, so the only solution is "degrade" windows security allowing unsigned drivers to load. Joysticks and gamepads are cheap, so you …

Re: Virge GX + Voodoo 2 vs. Voodoo Rush

in PC Emulation
I haven't had any of the combinations, but IMHO the answer is a big NO. Voodoo Rush is a 2D+3D card that drains less energy than any two card combination. On the other hand, Voodoo 2 is more powerful than Voodoo Rush, and S3 cards have more compatibility than the 2D part of the rush. If the S3 and …

ATI Rage XL PCI Express

in Milliways
I've been using an ATI Radeon 9200 PCI for testing purposes, because it worked in both AGP and PCI Express boards. Unfortunately, I had to sell it and actually I've got no "testing" video card. Now, I've bought a cheap ATI Rage XL (PCI) but modern motherboards are phasing out the PCI slots, so I'm …

Re: Rise of the Triad Remake

ROTT was not so great. "Blocky" maps and graphics (compared to Doom) and the level design was not so good. But it has some of the crazier and funnier multiplayer modes that I have seen in FPSs. I wonder why they weren't copied to modern games like Quake 3 or Unreal.

Re: Windows 98 vmware

in PC Emulation
Last time I tested it, it was not a great deal. Virtualbox only supports DirectX8 and later, in 2000 and later guests. That means that: - Windows 9x has no 3D acceleration. - Games using DirectX 7 or earlier (Final Fantasy VII, Diablo II, those things) won't work. You can try this with dxdiag... it …

Re: K6-2 Software coolers

in PC Emulation
There is an instruction (halt) that "halts" (what a surprise) the CPU until an interruption is received. Interruptions are generated by hardware devices (COM ports, the hardware clock, HDD controller), so the computer never locks in that state. When a CPU is halted it does nothing. In modern CPUs …

Re: K6-2 Software coolers

in PC Emulation
They're still useful, because Windows 9x virtual machines needs 100% CPU (or core) execution time. Installing one of those in a VM puts CPU time at a reasonable level. Also, they're useless when running under Windows 2000 or XP (because the OS does halt the processor). I don't remember if they offer …

Re: Can this be done... Windows 2000 SP4 + DOS boot disk [floppy]

in Windows
If the disk is formatted as NTFS, the answer is no. MS-DOS won't work with NTFS. If you installed Windows 2000 in a FAT partition, maybe. Only FreeDOS and the newer MS-DOS included with Windows 98 will work with FAT32 partitions, but almost every modern DOS (where modern >= 3.31) will work with …

Re: new setup = PC Linux

in Milliways
1.- KernelEx could help you. 2.- There are generic USB mass storage device drivers that can be used in Windows 98 or 98SE, but remember that Windows 98 only supports FAT --> http://www.technical-assistance.co.uk/kb/usbmsd98.php 3.- Try to not use Windows 98 fdisk. Try using any Linux fdisk, like …

Re: Help with dosbox to emulate dbase 5.0

in DOSBox General
Sorry, but as you said, FAT16 partitions have a 2Gb limitation, but: - Some MS-DOS and clones (like Windows 98 MS-DOS and FreeDOS) can use FAT32 partitions. - Network file systems doesn't have that limitation. That means that you could use MS-DOS 5 to connect to a filesystem with a few terabytes of …

Re: Final Fantasy 7

in Windows
No, that's not exact. Final Fantasy VII uses MIDI for music, but it have different MIDIs for General MIDI, Yamaha and Soundblaster AWE. In fact, it ships with a Yamaha XG software synthetizer, and some soundfonts for using with AWE. In Windows 7 it should work fine, providing that: - Your graphic …
