Re: How fast is too fast for DOS?

The main problems with faster processors are: - Games that do not adjust their speed or have fixed settings. Those games were designed to run in a 8086 at 4.77 o 8 MHz, or allows you to select from some fixed speeds of that time (like 80286 at 12 or 16 MHz). A 386 or better processor will be too …

Re: Soundcard advice for Win 7 Dosbox

in DOSBox General
If it works in Windows, it will work in DOSBox. I wouldn't recommend any sound card for DOSBox: DOS sound usually was not high fidelity, so any sound quality would be wasted. Maybe, you are looking for a sound card with low CPU use, but... In any case, I've got an Asus Xonar DS. It works in Windows …

Re: SATA question

Also, keep in mind that your mainboard will be probably a SATA 1 (1.5Gb) board, and most modern devices are at least SATA 2 (3.0Gb). There are few devices that autodetect SATA speed, but most SATA 2hard disks have some jumper settings to allow lower speeds (in WD hard disks is labelled OPT1). If …

Re: can himem and emm386 manage 256MB of ram?

in DOS
Try HIMEMX and JEMM from FreeDOS, they support more than 256Mb, but remember that Windows 3.x may not run in other OSs than MS-DOS. If you install 256Mb of RAM in a DOS machine, it will boot but it won't use more than 64Mb. Also, Windows 9x, NT4 and later will get happily that amount of memory, so …

Re: Which Soundblaster/mouse driver does DOSBox use?

in DOSBox General
I installed DOS on a VM because DOSBox was way too slow on my i7. Being unfamiliar with DOS, I was barely able to install a Soundblaster driver which worked for one game but kept crackling up on another, and the mouse driver I have is very unsmooth so I am unable to select some checkboxes in some …

Re: Vendor/promotional Maps

in Milliways
As far as I remember S3 also had some Unreal maps, showing benefits of S3TC. Also, Via levels used to be in their viatech site, but I'm unable to find them.

Re: What is comparable to / what are the limits?

in DOSBox General
OK, so these are the results. I've used PCPBench, SysChk and Navràtil Software System Information (the later two from Hiren's Boot CD 15.1). PCPBench: - PC DOSBox: 108.2 fps - DOSBox @3000: 0.7 fps - Wii DOSBox: 0.2 fps - Wii "Fast" DOSBox: 0.4 fps PCPBench /vgamode: - PC DOSBox: 180.8 fps - DOSBox …

Re: What is comparable to / what are the limits?

in DOSBox General
I don't know if pcpbench would find it out, but I would like to know what is it like compared to a "real world" PC. For example: "it is about a 386/40, don't try 486 games or it will stutter", or something like that. I've got some old DOS benchmarks, but they're too much imprecise when exceeding 386 …

What is comparable to / what are the limits?

in DOSBox General
Sorry, it's not a question about official DOSBox, but I don't know where can I ask. It's about DOSBox for Wii. I know that a Wii is not the most powerful console in the world, and running a non-x86 processor doesn't help to improve performance, so I think that DOSBox won't be able to emulate a " …

Re: Unique controllers! (SpaceOrb, P5 Glove, what else?)

in PC Emulation
Gravis Phoenix - an early multibutton joystick, with throttle and such, usable for flight sims, apparently for games like Wing Commander and similar. Analog and gameport support, with I believe a keyboard plug in for the extra buttons. However I don't know if it added any new abilities (I mean you …

Re: Best VLB video card?

Also it would be useful to know if those cards will work stable at 50MHz. I guess that a VLB card paired with a 50 Mhz CPU (486DX@50MHz) would be faster than the same card paired with a 33 Mhz CPU (I means, a 486DX2@66 MHz)... if it runs (maybe some cheap cards will work only at 25 or 33MHz).
