Finding old software by name or keywords

From time to time there are posts asking about whether anyone can find a particular piece of old software given its name and perhaps its developer. Sometimes there are even harder questions about whether there is any software utility for older operating systems which has a particular set of features …

Re: OT: DOS programming forums online?

I don't think you're prohibited from posting about that stuff on vogons - I don't think it's considered "off topic" - but you'd probably need to post in the DOS forum which has lots of non-programming-related stuff and your posts might get lost in the "noise" (there really aren't that many posts …

Re: Dos command to allocate memory

maybe EATMEM from this package will do. https://vetusware.com/download/TSR%20Utilities%202.9/?id=16287 EATMEM is also available from some shovelware CDs (without requiring you to register to download it), just to make it clearer that it doesn't seem to be problematic "abandonware" but rather just …

Re: Logging sound operations for a program in Windows 98

in Windows
PC Magazine 14 Jun 1994 page 340 talks about some relevant tools under the heading "Spying Tools". On page 341 it mentions Nu-Mega Bounds-Checker32. From Wikipedia I guessed that version 3 might have supported Windows 9x and so I did a Google search for "Bounds Checker 3.0" which revealed that …

Re: DOSBox debugger

needed to use the different load segments for with/without dosbox debugger The debugger causes changes to the memory layout for the programs running inside the emulated environment? If so that seems a bit wrong, and also something that would unfortunately be useful to someone wanted to write a copy …

Re: DOSBox debugger

Maybe someone will have some tips about how to achieve that with the DOSBox debugger, but another alternative might be to try running DOS under Bochs, then use Bochs's debugger which has read and write watch points - from https://bochs.sourceforge.io/cgi-bin/topper.pl?name=New+Bochs+Documentation& …

Re: Logging sound operations for a program in Windows 98

What kind of information do you want to get? Have you looked into any generic Win32 API monitoring/tracing/spying tools? I'm fairly sure that it was possible to perform Windows API tracing in Windows 3.x, so I'd like to think it could be done for Win32 API in 9x/Me too.

Re: Logging sound operations for a program in Windows 98

I imagine you wanted something that runs inside Windows but I know of something you can do at the emulator level. If you meet the narrow criteria of running under emulation and willing to use either Sound Blaster 16 or ES1370, then.. this still might not be very good, I don't know! Under Bochs 2.7, …

Re: My new old software projects

in Milliways
I've restarted work on another project I've been working on for a while which is converting DynaText documentation into HTML. I think I've done most of the hard parts and I'm just down to fixing lots of little bugs in the conversion process and tidying up my code before I put it on GitHub.

Re: Are there any boot.sys alternatives?

Got an update from the author of boot.sys: Thank you for contacting me. I'm glad that BOOT.SYS works for you. No, I'm not able to provide registered copies anymore. Please feel free to continue using the unregistered one. Except for the occasional timed registration reminder, you should not have …

Re: Appimages on Linux For Windows Games

in Windows
I was hoping that the link was to your AppImages - not to images containing Windows and game files which you're not allowed to redistribute, but to something like Dockerfiles which describe how to build the image - but then I realised that automating the installation and setup of all those games …
