So is there some legal reason why modern archivers don't support .ARC? WinRAR and 7-ZIP don't recognize it.

I used to have that edition. Revision 31 IIRC. It has the built-in hint engine. I can't imagine how anyone managed to finish the game without it....

That's quite a project you're contemplating. Do you really want to do this on an old computer? Never mind the speed and other technical limitations, are you sure it's not going to malfunction and take out hours/days/weeks of work? I remember BF1942 and DC. I think I stopped playing because hackers were becoming a problem. I stopped playing BF2142 because the servers were always nearly empty...

A problem here is the popular stereotype of video game programmers: overpaid, oversexed, underworked, and living basically rock star lifestyles. Think John Romero in his prime. Kids don't feel guilty about stealing from them any more than they feel guilty about stealing from actual rock stars.

That would be a problem yes. I was counting on using an external monitor. It originally came with a Rage Mobility M4 which I swapped out. That might work with monitor, but probably isn't powerful enough for late 90s 3D games.

Yes I was just reading about it now. It looks interesting. I did try ISOBuster a while ago without success. When I have time I'll get the old drives out and try DVD Disaster.

I might be confusing it with another game. It's been a few years. I'm pretty sure the cutscenes were unskippable though. Annoying.

That reminds me that I have a Dell laptop (Inspiron 8000) with similar specs somewhere. I haven't used it in years. It would probably make a good Windows 98 gaming machine. It has a GeForce2 Go and 512 MB of memory. But where would I plug in the joystick? Were PCMCIA cards with game port adapters …

Oh I tried lots of different drives. I rarely throw away optical drives. Typically when the doors stop opening I replace them and throw them in a box, which now contains about 20 of the things. They remain functional, at least for reading disks. I've tried the bad CDs in most of them.

I think in those days I was using a crippled version of Nero that came with my drive, a HP IIRC. This was with W98 on a 350Mhz PII. I recently cleared out/reburned all of my old CD-Rs from that era and most were still readable, but there were also a lot of duds. That reminds me, can anyone recommend …

IIRC, I never got far into Max Payne because it wouldn't let me (a) skip cutscenes, and (b) save the game when I wanted. Are there settings/patches that get rid of this behavior?

What killed the abandonware scene, at least for games, was the advent of cheap smartphones a decade ago. A lot of old games can be made to run on low power portable devices, and companies suddenly realised they could make money by repackaging and reselling them.

For Mac. The big ones are Marathon and Warcraft: Orcs and Humans but A10 Attack and FA/18 are good, too. Pathways into Darkness not as good as Marathon, but can be entertaining. Was a little under $14 shipped. I have this but can't get Warcraft sound to work properly. Title music and spoken intros …
