Re: Is it possible to have HDMI output in DOS 6.22?

in Marvin \ Video
There are LCDs that supports variable refresh rate thru DisplayPort on modern computers as recent video cards lacks analog output. ;) Absolutely! I like DP, because of the mechanical locking on the plug, among other things. But it seems to be a niche still. At least when it comes to consumer …

Re: UNIVBE 4.0 and old hardware

Hi again! I ran the following programs in SuperVGA (native modes) on my 286 @10MHz (with OAK-67): Windows 2.03 in 800x600 Windows 3.1 in 640x480 @256c (quick), 800x600 @256c (slow, but not related to the 286; uses 3.0 driver) PV picture viewer CompuShow 2000 And in VESA VBE via VESA67.COM: NO$GMB …

auron wrote on 2022-05-28, 19:04: probably a redundant question, but what kind of DOS software can leverage SVGA modes while actually running on a 286? Hi there! I'm afraid I don't understand the question. 😅

Re: Is it possible to have HDMI output in DOS 6.22?

I have a GeForce MX440 with a DVI port, and that works fine in DOS. However, when you use the DVI port it forces the Video signal to 60 Hz even if you use “70 Hz” display modes like text mode or 320x200. This is evidenced by scrolling demos either running too slow or stuttering where they shouldn’t …

UNIVBE 4.0 and old hardware

in Marvin \ Video
Hello everyone, I suppose this had been discussed a thousand time, but I felt the need to provide some feedback. In the past years, I had a lot of trouble getting UNIVBE to work on various PCs. It turned out, well it seems like that at least, that it was because I wasn't mainstream enough.: The PCs …

Re: Mspaint alternatives (Win32/Win64)?

GIMP truely is a mighty tool, even though I like my copy of CS2 on Mac! 😁 It's just that MS Paint was the defacto standard* for pixel artists. A whole community/society is based around MS Paint! As someone who preferred the old Paintbrush from Windows 3.x (based on ZSoft Paintbrush, ≠MS Paint), I …

Re: One color randomly goes off on my CRT

in Marvin \ Video
Turned out the problem was a cold solder joint somewhere on the neck board (the PCB that's directly connected to the cathode). I resoldered everything on that PCB, and the monitor has worked well ever since. Glad to hear! 😃👍 Just to be absolutely sure, I consulted my father yesterday's evening, too …

Hm. Maybe check the beta versions of Windows? Maybe from the early Longhorn days? Could be that some of the betas had new functions but the old look of MS Paint, not sure. MS Paint was very popular among pixel-artists, who created sprites for indie games etc.

Cold solder joint? Picture becomes pink, maybe? If it's a cold solder joint on the PCB, a cooler spray can help narrowing the error. Try the little PCB that's connected to the CRT socket. If the monitor is safely discharged and unplugged, you could try resoldering everything by heating the joints …
