Re: Win3mu Soon OpenSource

in PC Emulation
Wow, thanks! I've just tried, but my Athlon 64 w/ Win7 is too, old perhaps. The program just hung when I tried. Anyway, maybe I also did something wrong. The language is in Korean, it seems. Using Google Translator in auto mode failed. Here's the translation to English.

RTC as a sound chip / tone generator ?

in Milliways
Hi, just stumbled over a datasheet of the Motorola MC146818. That chip was used in the IBM AT -and- some PC/XT clones a long time ago. (Source: http://www.lpjjl.net/pgm/fichiers/docasm/RTC.txt) Originally, the PC/XT had no RTC, but could be upgraded with third-party RTCs (like the DS1216E ), in …

Re: Win3mu Soon OpenSource

in PC Emulation
Going back to Win3mu, there's another benefit it has over a real installation of Windows 3.1: It doesn't suffer from a jumpy mouse arrow: http://www.os2museum.com/wp/jumpy-ps2-mouse-in-enhanced-mode-windows-3-x/ That was an issue 386 Enhanced Mode suffered from. Sure, serial mice aside there was …

Re: Win3mu Soon OpenSource

Thanks! I'm currently reading Intel 80286 CPU: Real Mode Emulation I suppose that's about what FlexOS and Concurrent DOS 286 used to multitask MS-DOS programs on a 286. It's part of the 286 reference at https://www.pcjs.org/pubs/pc/reference/intel/80286/ That site also has information about the 386 …

Re: Measuring Performance in Ultima VII : The Black Gate

in Milliways
Speaking of Ultima VII, I just learned that its "Voodoo" memory mananger used unreal mode. No idea if this infomation is of any use (any degradations in performance ?), but I wanted you to know about it. It's menioned down in a posting at http://www.os2museum.com/wp/a-brief-history-of-unreal-mode/

Re: Win3mu Soon OpenSource

in PC Emulation
Just found out the very first 386 did behave similar to the 286 in a few ways. It wasn't designed to go back to real mode, for example. Funny how different reality can be from documented history, sometimes. :) It's also documented in the Intel iAPX 386 Architecture Specification, revision 1.8 (June …

Re: Win3mu Soon OpenSource

Thanks for reply! :) I'll try to respone to what you said. Please forgive my ignorance, though. I'm no developer. The 286 may have been clumsy at times, but it was a very clean design also. IMO, the 286 was a mess. They tried to bring ideas from the iAPX432 project to the 8086 architecture to make …

Re: IA-32 - does ip even exist?

in PC Emulation
Hi superfury, I'd really like to help you with that but I'm by far not compotent enough, I'm afraid. :sweatdrop: However, I can give a little tip. At OS2Museum, there are smart people who know the inside-outs of x86. More than often, they do discuss such complicated things: http://www.os2museum.com …

Re: Need Mac 7.1 install Diskettes.

Hi, I'm speaking under correction, but it could be possible that "Disk Utility" -or how the Mac OS 9 tool is called-, can be used to write back disk images. Sorry, I'm still learning about Macs.. Edit: I remember there was "Drive Setup" and "Disk Copy", too.

Re: Win3mu Soon OpenSource

in PC Emulation
Me, too! Thanks for your comment! :D The 286 may have been clumsy at times, but it was a very clean design also. Ironically, Windows 3.1 could have had virtual memory if MS only put more efforts into it. A lot of people don't know that the 286 MMU had the power to address up to 1GB of virtual memory …

Re: EMS or XMS for games?

Hi, thanks! Yeah, I guess I'm kind of lucky that my board is one of the more comfortable models.. Depending on how your chipset works and how it allocated memory, it *could* be possible that Himem could access Extended Memory still. Things is, you have to load the EMS driver first and Himem. …

Re: Win3mu Soon OpenSource

in PC Emulation
That could be possible. Though Win16 apps were friendly when it came to different modes. The 64K segments worked in real, protected and v86 mode. In its essence, Windows 3.x never required v86. Windows 3.1 once ran on true 286es, after all. In addition, the NTVDM/WoW also existed in a fully emulated …

Re: EMS or XMS for games?

Interesting, maybe I need to make the default mode of my HT12/A 286 pc to use the Headland EMS memory driver rather than DOS6.22 himem.sys Also in this machine I have installed a Kingston 386sx33 upgrade, in that case what is better? emm386 , headland ems or himem.sys ? I never thought of that …

Re: CGA Composite (TV vs Monitor)

in Marvin \ Video
It depends on the monitor/TV set, I believe. In essence, they work the same internally. Back in time, our TV sets had no composite (CVBS) inputs, just an RF input. That was an integrated composite monitor+VHF tuner combo, so to say. In contrast to TV sets, pure composite or monochrome monitors were …
