Re: Windows 7 Retro?

ReactOS team will never be finished working on ReactOS, sadly. Or not sadly, depending on how we look at it: They started before my little sister was even born and now she moved away with her friend. Anyway. ReactOS is a friendly project with a big goal. Re-programming Windows from scratch is a huge …

Creepy Windows 95

in Milliways
Hi everyone, Just found something amusing. Did you ever feel that there's something wrong with Win 95? (Well, yes, Win95 was no real 32-Bit real operating system. That's old news, though.) If you did, have a look at this site. You won't* regret it. https://windows95tips.com/

Re: Windows 7 Retro?

I kinda always had a soft spot for XP, though: https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?p=497428#p497428 (^Older thread) Long story short: It was advanced enough to lend a helping hand (to the user), without trying to manipulate the user. That was something negative introduced in Vista. That UAC, which …

Re: Dram + 286 question

Oh, come on, let's relax. 😁 I mentioned it, because that board is at least available. And slow RAM is better than no RAM at all. - Personally, I could live with that speed penalty (I've got another UMB catd for testing) also. BocaRAM,AST Rampage and so on are either rare or expensive. Anyway, Lo- …

Re: Running os 7.x on pentium 1 hardware

Executor is a bit like WINE or TOS2WIN , I assume. It's a high-level emulation approach (OS level emulation) rather than a plain hardware emulator. So I guess it should be good enough for classic MacOS games such as " System's Twilight ".. In fact, it may have been even faster because of this …

Re: Dram + 286 question

I second that. As a "cheap" starter kit, I think the 1MB RAM card from Lo-Tech (or from other makers) is worth a look. It's merely an 8-Bit UMB RAM card, though. So it's a little bit of a performance bottle-neck.. Nevertheless, it maybe can be helpful to get DOS and drivers out of conventional …

Re: Windows 7 Retro?

I use Win7 exclusively as my "retro emu" box - think DosBOX, ScummVM, SCVA, Munt, etc. No native gaming - that's for another OS dual-booted on the same PC - WinXP. That's cool, IMHO. Seven was the last real OS, before the Software-As-A-Service mantra became the norm: It was the pinnacle, so to say, …

Re: No Upper Memory?

@cyclone3d I second that. Also, as a last resort - QEMM 8 (or 9 ?) is Windows 9x compatible. Though, on the other hand, introduces some extra compatibility/stability issues. So perhaps it's better to try getting it to work the normal way. Edit: MemMaker doesn't offially support DOS 7.x. The EMM386 …

Re: IPX removed from Linux Kernel in 4.18 - Wine & IPX Gaming?

Let's don't worry, AppleTalk/LocalTalk seems still to be there. 🙂👍 https://cregit.linuxsources.org/code/4.18/net/appletalk/sysctl_net_atalk.c.html https://www.downtowndougbrown.com/2020/08/hacking-up-a-fix-for-the-broken-appletalk-kernel-module-in-linux-5-1-and-newer/ That works okay for networking …

The Eyecam - a type of webcam you wouldn't expect

in Milliways
Hi everyone, Just found something that's both amazing and bizarre at the same time. It's an Open Source webcam that's very.. natural. Or maybe, not. Anyway, it's definitely something to keep an eye to. https://technabob.com/blog/2021/04/12/the-eyecam-realistic-eye-webcam/ https://marcteyssier.com/ …

Re: Windows 7 Retro?

Oh, it's you, sir. Nice to see you again. Yes, I think it was normal Windows XP for x86. And belive it or not, in the mid-late 2000s, I had got a P4 (Prescott) based PC that I really liked. Maybe it was as noisy as a room filled with Tribbles, but the single core performance was decent. 😎

Re: Windows 7 Retro?

You guys and gals are a bit too late.. Ten years ago, people already did philosophize about XP's retro-ness. 😀 Luckliy, I was around at the time and captured that awesome article for you. Happy reading! 😀

Re: No Upper Memory?

Hi, good morning - there's a typo in config.sys. The driver is HIMEM.SYS, without the TH. Not sure if that's the issue, though. I'm no Win9x expert, I think. At least in MS-DOS 6.2x, there must be a second line, like the first one, but with EMM386.EXE. For example : DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE RAM …

Re: How to finish DOS?

And please don't be confused if Autoexec.bat merely contains PATH= instead of SET PATH= Both are valid. Similarly, there also was the ERASE command which did the same as DEL.. Edit: Some not so important detail.. Programs in a directory that is mentioned first are executed first, too. So if SMARTDRV …
