Re: SVGA minimum RAM?

in Marvin \ Video
I had a 256kb SVGA video card 800x600x16 was possible Also had a windows driver for 640x400x256 which I’m told is abit odd. Always wondered why more cards didn’t support that out of the box? I confirm this. The Paradise PVGA1A driver for Windows 2.x does support this, for example. I've sucessfully …

Re: ECS EZ-D1S4-2 with SB-Link?

in Marvin \ Sound
This thread confuses me. Someone is looking for assistance with SB-Link and about all people try to persuade him/her in a very obtrusive kind of way to use hacky PCI stuff instead (PC/PCI, DDMA etc). If both the main board and the soundcard have SB-Link, why shouldn't he/she use it ? Also …

Re: Mediavision Thunderboard repair advice

in Marvin \ Sound
I've got a Thunderboard, too. Though I don't know how to help. :( There's a test/diagnostics program on the original disk.. Anyway, my guess is it's either the 386 amp or one of the caps. I've once had a Pixie transmitter for shortwave, which also came with a broken LM386 (likely cheap clone of it). …

Re: Compaq Prosignia 3080 / 486DX33

So have you tested TIGA under Windows? My understanding is that it shouldn't be worse than 8514/A, which was it's main competitor. Apparently Hercules' main target market for their TIGA cards were Windows users. I've never owned a TIGA card, so I wonder if there is much variation in performance …

Re: Uneven framerate / missing frames in WinXP

in Marvin \ Video
It was like this since clean installation. Installed apps don't feature new services -- few Benchmarks, Drivers and a Backup solution. Have you tried to increase or decrease PCI latency in BIOS? Disable AC97 codec? Basically, XP sucks with only 512MB RAM. I won't do an XP machine with less than 1GB …

Re: 86box to substitute for my broken 486

in PC Emulation
Ultimately, I am going to have to invest in a new Socket 3, PCI, coin-battery board and hope it doesn't die, in order to fully enjoy MS-DOS gaming. I'll keep playing with 86box and DOSBox, however. But my star up files were perfect and everything was set up just right on my 4DPS and I had over 600k …

Re: Windows 95/98 emulation/VM options?

in PC Emulation
I second that. Before PCem existed, I had to go with Qemu. Gratefully, the KQemu add-on saved me from mental breakdown (more or less). The only other solution at the time was VPC 2004/7, which had guest additions for Win9x but was otherwise pretty limited (graphics had to be software-rendered).

Re: 86box to substitute for my broken 486

in PC Emulation
The problem is that oakcdrom.sys uses a lot of memory. So far, it seems that having vide-cdd.sys work with the drive as a slave is the only option. It is a driver specific issue, so maybe someone could hack the driver and add whatever allows other drivers to work be implemented. I was over at the …
