I also was a happy user of Acronis True Image! Used version 7 to 10, if memory serves. And some of the 20xx releases. They never failed for me. If modern hardware caused issues with compatibility, I simply used the most modern emercency boot medium to restore the older backups.

Hi, I'm not sure. There's also an OEM ID that can be retrieved (MSD can display it) aside from version number. Anyway, there's also DOSVER, a third party utility. I use it on MS-DOS 6.x to report a fake DOS 3.30 version number. This makes Win 2.x run happily. 😀

I second that. Before PCem existed, I had to go with Qemu. Gratefully, the KQemu add-on saved me from mental breakdown (more or less). The only other solution at the time was VPC 2004/7, which had guest additions for Win9x but was otherwise pretty limited (graphics had to be software-rendered).
