Re: 86box to substitute for my broken 486

in PC Emulation
I've managed to dive into 86box a bit, and I am back to playing with DOS commands and editing start up files. Though I can't get VIDE-CDD.SYS to load on the Rise Computer R418 when the cdrom is placed on the secondary master. Wait, I've had the same issue with PCem! Using OAKCDROM.SYS …

Re: DOS 6.22 vs DOS7.0 compatibility difference

Were any two different versions of dos guaranteed to have 100% compatibility? It depends. MS-DOS 6.x was very compatible to MS-DOS 5 on the kernal level. MS-DOS 5 in turn was compatible to MS-/PC-DOS 3.30.. So maybe a newer IBM PC-DOS is worth a try ? - I'm not sure. Mainly used PC-DOS 3.30 for …

Re: Best tracker MODS ever

in Milliways
Sounds good, thanks, too! :) Found a MOD server at http://artscene.textfiles.com/music/mods/ while looking for "Moog - Bird's Eye View". Some fine (random) mods with a more melodic, less scene-like sound that come to mind..: a_piece_of_magic.mod beyond_music.mod blue-ba.xm doh_orange_ocean.it Flying …

Re: Windows 3.11 on a 386SX

Win 3.x games were fairly... basic... You might get your fix before you've justified the hardware costs -- although decent accelerated ISA cards don't exactly cost a premium. Well, by today's standards, of course, they were. But in comparison to other desktop games from the mid-1980s they weren't …

Re: How to edit a .dll file?

A hex editor is the tool for the job. There are many. I used XVI32 in the past, but you have your pick of dozens. I used that, too. It has an unusual feature - an option to fix the 200MHz speed bug in Turbo Pascal 7 (?) programs, as far as I remember. However, it doesn't work so well at splitting/ …

Re: zBoy - a GameBoy Classic emulator

I hope you didn't get it the wrong way. :sweatdrop: I didn't meant to discourage anyone. The other emulator I mentioned started in the 90s and is nearly 20 years old by now. And a lot of things changed since then. Many new algorithms and an increase in emulation knowledge appeared (principle of …

Re: PCEm. Another PC emulator.

in PC Emulation
I have tried out PCEM and am fairly impressed. My quite crappy laptop (Pentium Silver N5000) manages to emulate a Pentium 90 at full speed (between 99-101 percent, very rarely dropping to 97 percent) I suspect DOSBox allows x2 times faster emulation. Mb useful for late 3D DOS games. I second that. …

Re: Mixed mode CD image in .IMG format?

in Milliways
So my questions are: 1. Does somebody knows what application could have been used to create this? I tried opening the IMG file in WinImage, UltraISO, PowerISO, but none of them recognizes or displays the audio tracks, only the data part. 2. Can I use this IMG file in DosBox like a BIN/CUE image so …

Re: 86box to substitute for my broken 486

in PC Emulation
Is there anything I should know? What are the lowest system requirements for 486 to Pentium pcs? I've been having difficulty finding 86box forums. Well, I'm not 100% sure, since my father and me haven't kept track of current PC development, but.. I've managed to run a higher end 486 emulation on an …

Re: Windows 3.11 on a 386SX

To make Windows 3.1 GUI more snappy, it could help to install a cheap 387 co-processor It could? [CITATION NEEDED] Here you go. :) https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=61&t=57408 It's an older thread, though. The article said that, unlike Windows 3.0, Windows 3.1 used the FPU for drawing. Which …

Re: Windows 3.11 on a 386SX

The integrated vga (Western Digital paradise) feels a little slow, but I don't have plans to try an isa vga card. The isa bus is running at 10mhz. I did try some multimedia titles like Living Books, but most of the animation was choppy. Even when playing the Win3.1 version of Wheel of Fortune, I …

Re: Windows 3.11 on a 386SX

I’ve got Win3.11 running on my 386sx-20 w/ 4mb ram. It’s acceptable, although I find it can handle only the simplest games. Well, it depends on the point of view, I guess. :) I played most games in that era on a 286-12 w/ 4MiB of RAM and was satisfied with the performance. The other specs were a …

Re: Windows 3.11 on a 386SX

Yes, 3.1 was the most common and known version. But 3.11 had bug fixes. There's no reason not to use 3.11. I second that. From what I remember, Win 3.11 was even silently shipped in the normal 3.1 package, simply as an updated disk set. The 3.11 version number was not mentioned in the boot splash …
