Re: Alton M571

The main problem about the integrated VGA is mentioned on the site you linked to: http://m571.com/m571/m571upgrade.htm "My own tests show that memory performance suffers approximately 30% by using the onboard video function as opposed to using any PCI video card." This is quite obvious since memory …

Re: "WANTED: vintage computers" - does this work?

in Milliways
In The Netherlands I've placed a few wanted advertisements on a website that deals specifically with anything related to hardware and I did get a few responses and ended up with a couple nice cards...but I didn't really always get what I had hoped for. That was a couple years ago. I was actually …

Re: My Retro 3Dfx Build

Yep I have the Intel stock HSF but it does use metal clips. The were a pain to clip on as the metal was quite stiff. That is a good thing I guess; good thermal contact. The Tualatin-s 1400 is a good idea. I see on eBay they have ones pin modded and some without. Since I have a Slot T and a native …

Re: My Retro 3Dfx Build

Welcome aboard, young lurkling! :D I see you're using a stock Intel HSF. I always found those to make a nasty whining noise. Btw are the clips that attach the HSF to the socket made out of plastic? If they are, I always found those to be brittle. I always re-use the heatsinks, use a clip from a …

Re: My AMD Athlon Socket A system..

One question though: Why would you go for 2k over XP? Afaik theres only few advantages to using 2k over XP (one is that some older hardware is better supported in 2k). Both seem to be about equally fast or slow on more recent systems and XP is easier to tweak using nlite. 2k has lower requirements …

Re: What does this dream mean?

Dreams are always strange. I had a particularly strange and gory dream last night but I suppose it's just something that's on your mind somehow? At any rate, looks like your retro hardware has at least gotten your attention. If that's a good or a bad thing? That really is up to you to interpret 😀

Re: Arman's Socket 7 Build

I've always wondered why the SIMM modules sometimes had very big RAM chips (in your case the 8MB modules) while before that and afterwards the RAM chips had the normal size? Those very large chips always are 2MB each so it's easy to count the amount of memory on those modules. From the photo's it …
