Maybe it's somekind of system administrator thingy so the machine could have it's (whatever) checked quickly in the field? If this is the case, then I'd expect some entry in the BIOS making this feature on-offable

I wouldn't bother replacing caps on a Slot 1 board, it's easier (and usually cheaper) to simply get another Slot 1 board. The Katmai 550 may not be dead, I've found cleaning the contacts with a paper cloth and some rubbing alcohol turns "dead" Slot 1 CPU's back to life on more then 1 occasion ;) …

My theory is that the old burners are better balanced than many of their reader counterparts, and "may" be more silent as a result. This is only my "juuust had my first sip of coffee" theory so it may be half baked 😜

A bit offtopic, but I personally build a system around a motherboard/CPU combo and pick my parts to match. The matching parts can also mean a mid-range newer card or a top-notch older card, whatever fits the bill.

Iirc they (at least the Nehemiahs) had bridges on top of the CPU package similar to the Thunderbirds. I also read in the datasheet (will edit this post to provide link later) the multi could be changed vy software
