Re: SBEMU: Sound Blaster emulation on AC97

@bert003 VSB, a much older piece of software, can work in two modes: in QEMM mode when QEMM is loaded, or in an alternative mode that works only when no EMM manager is loaded at all, since it will then switch the CPU into V8086 mode itself. But regardless of which mode it's used in, it does not work …

Re: Games with Adlib as an option for sound effects

in DOS
@ViTi95 I assume with "digitized music" you mean tracker music as opposed to FM music? I'm still wondering whether it would be feasible to combine PCM sound effects with FM music playback, at least on an OPL3, which has twice the number of channels as an OPL2 and also doesn't need long delays …

Re: Games with Adlib as an option for sound effects

in DOS
Does this take up all of the available "voices" of the FM synthesizer? Or is there a way to combine PCM sample output with FM music playback, albeit with fewer channels/voices? And are there any games that do that? You can use any individual FM channel as a pseudo-DAC in this way. However, …

Re: Games with Adlib as an option for sound effects

in DOS
I haven't come across any. Tricking the Adlib to "sample" PCM audio via PWM through the OPL2/OPL3 would be quite a feat. Stereo .mods (with sampled audio, of course) through the Adlib? Wild! The method used is not PWM. Instead the oscillator is triggered and then stopped at its maximum amplitude, …

Re: OPL2LPT

No. But instead games can be patched to use 3bc instead of 378h Sigh... If only all game developers had the discipline and foresight to properly look up the I/O port addresses of the available LPT ports in the BIOS Data Area, instead of just lazily hard-coding the I/O addresses that the original …

Re: ESS Solo 1 different versions

Well, if anybody with an ESS Solo-1 (or a YMF-7xx) PCI sound card, a PCIe motherboard with a recent chipset and a PCI-to-PCIe adapter is reading this, there is something that I hope somebody could test: If such a card is installed in a motherboard with a newer chipset that does not support …

Re: FastDoom. A new Doom port for DOS, optimized to be as fast as possible for 386/486 personal computers!

FastDoom uses DPMI to manage memory, so only XMS is used (himem.sys) I also wanted to do the same and see if there is any performance regression, but don't have enought time to do it, so any help here is welcome. Right now I'm focusing on optimizing backbuffered modes (CGA, EGA, ColorPlus, Hercules …
