There's a SDL2 port of DOSBox on the forum somewhere. Issue might be fixed there.

IIRC, switching SDL to use WINDIB will fix it or upgrade to Windows 8. DOSBox & Aero (Transparency disabled on Full/Windows mode switch)

KVM and ESX can. Haven't kept track of QEMU but it would make since if it did since QEMU uses KVM. I thought FF7 was patched to work fine in modern windows? and then there was the re-release of the game on Steam as well. and there's always the PS version of it. The only time you have to worry about things potentially breaking is: if/when DRM is installed or if multipled versions of that DRM is installed. 0.74 is the latest and best version as far as regular users are concerned. If they have a issue then they need to tell us. It may or may not be fixed in the SVN. The SVN isn't ideal for regular users since a change may possibly break something.

They can gobble all the resouces they want as long as it doesn't interfere with anything I want to do. I haven't noticed any issues in all my years using them (I haven't used firefox heavily for years now). Nice try ad industry. I'll keep up the good fight.

I agree on not using the MS-DOS setup to setup your drive. To confirm it's not your copy of DOS try the FreeDOS floppy at the end of the page to format and partition your drive: http://www.freedos.org/download/

You can't disable DWM in Windows 8. I haven't experienced this slowdown issue with old games that I've seen people refer to but I haven't been able to perform extensive compatibility testing with Windows 8 as I have with the earlier versions of windows due to not enough time. It's either a OS issue …

The rumour is that the new start menu will be provided in the new big update later this year. The start button in 8.1 is just an icon that pops open the full screen start menu

IIRC XP drivers work on Windows 7 and will allow you to run command prompt full-screen.

Currently the only way you are going to be able to get XP/2003 to run DX11 is by using Windows 8 in a VM using WARP10 (software DX emulation) It's pretty much unusable tho so no point.
