Re: interesting

"but CPUs these days are fast enough that performance should not be an issue." heh. I'm sure ReactOS intended audience is not for i7+ processors but hell by the time ReactOS is usable the i7 will be ancient so they should be good. (Basing this on DOSBox performance for later DOS era games)

Re: Sticking with XP a smart move?

That's Windows 2000. XP works fine for now. (IIRC, Steam works on 2K via blackwingcat or WildBill API wrappers) According to the survey XP still accounts for 6% http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/ I want to say they dropped support for 9x and 2000 when they were 1% or below. They probably …

Re: Donkey.NET

in Windows
Couldn't hurt to use a VM. On any new image I build I start out with the lowest .NET first and then go up. I received the same previously installed error message on 8.1 and my 1.0 and 2.0 folders are empty so looks like the newer vers are interfeering.. (Didn't bother to manaully install .NET on …

According to assemblyinfo it's a .net 1.0 app. Looks like .net 1.0 cannot install on Windows 8.1 (installs on 2008R2 with the launch condition modification tho) Attached .NET 1.0 with modified installer. Does not include: 1.0 SP3 NDP1.0sp3-KB928367-X86-Enu NDP1.0sp3-KB947739-X86-Enu Fault bucket …

Re: Donkey.NET

in Windows
There is .NET 1.0 and .NET 1.1. I'm at work so can't check but I believe I had to do something with the installer to get it to run on Vista+. Reason I needed it was my last job the ADP app they used needed one of those versions to run so I was able to move their app from a Windows 2000 server to …

I was about to post the same thing. And here's an example: http://arstechnica.com/security/2014/04/how-a-website-flaw-turned-22000-visitors-into-a-botnet-of-ddos-zombies I didn't see NotScript in his list..... I'd lke to see a web browser that completely focuses on security by default and then …

Re: WinXP and Office XP/2003 Updates after April 2014

Do you think running an old OS like WinNT 4.0 might be more impervious to viruses since the virus program may not be able to run? Depends on how it's programmed. Some are very specfic exploiting zero days. Some require a user to execute a program or click a link. If the program or link download a …

Re: What happened to Firewire tech?

I used to use firewire for my external HD backups. It was much faster and more reliable than USB. Haven't touched it since I moved to using external NAS. EDIT eSATA is a PITA for external hard drives.

Re: HALF-LIFE

I'm with you there. I can't stand real-world location in games unless there is something different about it. Ex: Duke Nukem 3D, Half-Life. Still didn't like Xen tho. 😀

Re: HALF-LIFE

in Windows
1.1.1.0 is the last official update for the non-steam ver of Half-Life. .1 and .2 are unofficial updates for those that don't want to use the Steam ver. Nowadays the steam ver can be easily made to not use steam so the only other possible issue with using that ver is backwards compatibility with …

I don't understand the difficulty. "The following code sample is a batch file that installs multiple product updates and makes sure that the correct files are replaced after the computer is restarted. @echo off setlocal set PATHTOFIXES=E:\hotfix %PATHTOFIXES%\Q123456_w2k_sp4_x86.exe /Z /M % …
