If the games your playing do not support saving themselves then your only other option is to play the games using Virtual PC. It may be possible to use DOSBox in Virtual PC and save the state with VPC......not sure if that would actually work or not or what the performance would be like.

Did you ever try playing the game in normal core? I doubt it would be playable enough for testing in normal core but if you could test it with that and it worked then that would narrow it down. Dungeon Keeper uses IPX/SPX. If using the Windows ver of DK then you'll need to use Hamachi and a Windows version capable of using IPX/SPX. If using the DOS version all you need is DOSBox.

Most games after 1993 are protected mode games and almost all use the DOS4GW extender with a couple using CSDPMI or their own custom extender.

No VM or wrapper program provides D3D support lower than DX8 (except of course if you use Linux in a VM and then use Wine) Microsoft Virtual PC is the best VM for Windows 9x.
