Veil of Darkness came out in 1993 so it may be a real mode game if so then DosBox does not use auto-cycles so you'll have to use Ctrl+F11/F12 manually. (F11 to decrease cycles and F12 to increase). It's in the README in the Start Menu under the DosBox heading.

Look, if you want real DOS then boot real DOS. DosBox is not MS-DOS. Never will be. We don't want it to be. Changing the version # is just that. It changes the # because the program\game looks for a specific version #.
