Re: Early Multiplayer DOS games

in Milliways
The only small multiplayer games I played back then were BBS games. I played very few multiplayer games (non-BBS) and when I did they were usually the big releases and I only played them over modem or school LAN. These would be the typical Doom/Duke3D//Hexen/Heretic/Mech2/Falcon 3.0/Wacky Wheels/ …

Re: Win 3.11 - Dust

As far as 16bit Quicktime support. Alot of those old 16bit games that require Quicktime work just fine in Vmware/VPC. They work in Qemu too but obviously Qemu will be much slower. Also it's really usefull to find the MAC versions of these games and run them under an emulator since there is much less …

Re: Running slow (system shock)

command.com? It's not necessary to use that and in my experience it's quite a bit slower than cmd.exe. Beside's NTVDM works the same in CMD.exe as it does in command.com, although there are a few differences in command.com II've NEVER had to use command.com to get a game working in Windows 2000/XP …

Re: Win 3.11 - Dust

Yeah, I don't think we can expect DosBox to support WIN32, at least not for the near future. Remember Win32 was Microsoft progressing away from 16bit code for Windows programs to 32bit code. Wasn't it also decided that the fix for the mouse issues in dynamic core in Windows would slow down DosBox? …

Re: Dongle support doesn't work

I think we may eventually see LPT support in DosBox (I'm just guessing) but it of course is not a high priority as compared to other things. Personally I'd rather see GLIDE support before LPT support even though oddly I probably have more DOS games that print than DOS games that use GLIDE.........

NTVDM is screwy. Some apps run just fine in Windows 2000 NTVDM but don't in XP NTVDM. Some apps run just fine in XP NTVDM but don't in 2000 NTVDM. The 2003 NTVDM is really screwy on my computer since apps seem to run much more slowly and switching between fullscreen/windowed modes takes even longer …

Re: Getting physfs to work

I haven't tried physfs out recently but I remember that I wasn't able to view the contents of the zip's (although they mounted fine) if I used "Deflate64" instead of just "deflate" for compression. Som make sure you use "deflate". This was with 7-zip. I'll see if I can test this again tonight but …

Re: Running slow (system shock)

I wonder if those complaining about SS and performance have tried the latest CVS. I don't have the CD version of SS but the floppy version works quite well in DosBox for me. Considering that I can play Mech 2 quite fine in 640x480 I don't see why the CD version wouldn't work well. This is on a XP …

Re: tomb raider crashing during save

Nah, Install went fine. Most likely I used an updated version of a program I already had and it used that .dll that communicates directly with I/O. Can't remember the name right now but it used to cause problems with MBM and VDmSound until Vlad contacted the MBM author and got it fixed. Something …

Re: tomb raider crashing during save

heh. I recently reinstalled Windows XP. I have a list of standard software I install each time I reinstall and this time I really haven't strayed (much) from this list. Bare XP SP2 with no updates since..... Just noticed yesterday that absolutely NO dos games will work in NTVDM now except for 16bit …

Re: VR headsets and DosBox

Was testing out Descent 1 in CVS today and noticed the VR options in the setup: The: I-glasses! support COM1-COM4 The rest of the VR selections don't list what interface they use.... IIRC, The VFX was the most popular and I found a list of supported games here: http://www.mindflux.com.au/products/ …

Re: Need advice on getting a new soundcard

Heh. While visiting my parent's for Christmas I decided to fix their ol' K63-400 for good. Previously I hade stuck a Geforce FX 5200 and a SoundBlaster Audigy 2 in there. Unfortunately the Geforce FX wasn't very compatible with the VIA motherboard (it didn't seem to be a PSU issue although the PSU …

Re: EMS memory problems in WinXP

IIRC, NTVDM.EXE and NTVDMD.dll in your \windows\system32 handles all of that. The rest of the 16bit files are in \windows\system for 3.1 compatibility. Then VGA.SYS handles access to your video card in full screen console mode. I guess you could look through all the updates and look for any that …
