Go to start/run and type in "dxdiag" Now go to "Music" and see if it mentions anything about MIDI. Report back what it says.

Use the latest CVS version of DosBox. Try different Sound cards like Gravis for sound instead of SB or an older SB card. Don't just set DosBox to "15,000 cycles", monitor your cpu usage with Task Manager and make sure that you don't exceed 95%. Make sure that your using either output=overlay or …

Which ver of DosBox are you using? What utility did you use to create the image? What parameters are you using with Imgmount? and finally.... why are you using HD images in DosBox?

I've used the freedos one (at least I think it was FreeDOS) every now and then when playing text mode games or to up the text mode resolution in DosBox. Very usefull to get more info on screen.

Nah, it's not VdmSound that's eating up the cycles. It's NTVDM (Windows NT4/2000/XP/2003/Vista's DOS emulation layer). Yeah, I think VDMSound refers to Idle Sensitivity as "try to reduce cpu usage....among other things", I'll have to look at it again tho. As far as sound quality goes it depends on …

Probably too slow. NTVDM eats up processor cycles which takes away processing time needed for SB emulation. Have you tried adjusting the "idle sensitivity" option in the Vdmsound shortcut? I would have you run system monitor to monitor your processor but it's not really necessary to do so since …

Not sure if Qbix wants to include edit or not. Although it would be usefull....... Edit for me is too slow for viewing text files....and kinda unecessary if you just want to view a text file quickly.

heh. I'm staring back and forth between the blank dosbox icon right now and that big honkin' dosboxicon5.7-128.png....weird. :D So the 256-color and the 24bit ones are about the same huh? Not really suprising considering the uniformity....hmm. Good thing tho since it means it's the same icon design …

Hmmm, sometimes when I copy files I: 1. Go to the directory where I want the files. CD \games 2. Copy the files to the directory Copy A:\*.* This would copy the files from A:\ to \games as long as your in \games.

Hmm, forgot about the shortcut then and just surf to the directory via command prompt and then execute "DOSDRV" and type go into setup.exe to setup your sound card, then execute doom. The latest ver of VDMSound is here: VDMSound 2.1.0 PUBLIC BETA Remember that VDMSound uses IRQ7 while NTVDM uses IRQ5 Either create a VDMSound shortcut by right-clicking on doom.exe or just run DOSDRV before executing doom.

Plain old boring Doom should run just fine in Windows XP NTVDM...probably with NTVDM SB emulation too if for some strange reason you don't want to use VDMSound. Never understood people who want to play original Doom without improvements but it's your game and you can do what you want with it. 😀

install.dat is simply a data file. You cannot run a file that ends in .dat (well...ah nevermind). Anyways the only files you'll see for installing DOS games are install.exe, setup.exe, or install.com, setup.com or .bat.
