Re: Huge 286 tower found

Did a 286 really need a huge case like this 1? A huge tower like that would be of little use unless you are building a professional system with a lot of drives installed like a workstation or server. A simple desktop or mini tower is enough for a period gaming rig. I'd rehouse the 286 in a smaller …

Re: Too much RAM for some games?

in DOS
I find it ironic how games back then used to always be demanding more memory in order to run but then when you gave it to them they still wouldn't run because you gave them too much. 🤣

Re: Cute PC chassis

I also like the desktop GX1 case because the way it opens and is laid out inside reminds me of the case to my Powermac 7500/7600 machines which are among the easiest to service Macs of that time period.

Re: Steam Machine (Valve's first console)

I can't see buying a console to run PC games. If I want to play PC games, I'd rather play them on a PC so I can upgrade my hardware if my system turns out to be a little too slow at the settings I want to play at. Fixed hardware that can't be upgraded sucks in that regard, which is why the XBox 360 …

Re: Winamp is Dead

As long as there is a cash bidder interested in acquiring the technology, it won't go open source. Microsoft is only sniffing around to see if they can add anything to their patent portfolio so they can troll more people for violating their patents than they already do.

SIMM sockets on a 286? I never would have thought. What would you do with them? Yup. I bought a board from artifact systems a while back that had them. They are only on late production 286 boards, which is probably why a lot of people have never seen them. Boards that have them usually also have a …

Re: Cute PC chassis

I'm partial to the Dell Optiplex GX1 desktop case (that's why I have 3 of them) And the tower version isn't bad, either It's just a shame they're proprietary.

Re: Winamp is Dead

My fondest memories of Winamp revolved around a pirate internet TV station called UK Gold (not related to the legitimate UK cable television channel of the same name). I say "pirate" because they used to broadcast a lot of classic television shows and films without the consent of copyright holders …

Re: Rare CPUs

I think the rarest is the 486slc that's in the IBM PS/2 Model 30-286. It was a very niche processor, mainly aimed at laptop manufacturers that wanted 486 speeds without creating a fully 32-bit bus or going with a 386sx. The second most rare is probably the Intel 387 and AMD? or Cyrix? coproessor …
