Performance-wise it's irrelevant in practice with today's hardware as you said. Probably no visual differences either. It's just a fact that modern cards can't do this feature in those games. I think they are constantly omitting old extensions so it may be only a matter of time until these games …

Linux gaming failed once already. I can remember a brief period of time when you could buy boxed copies of games for Linux in software stores but it didn't last long. Within a few months none of the retailers would carry them anymore because they weren't selling. It is quite different nowdays …

It's also too early to even state any success about Linux gaming. The current big WMs are a trainwreck arms race for unproven 'modern UI' concepts, the drivers often don't work (why would one need a Radeon HD6000/7000+ to play TF2, a 2007 game with support for the Geforce3/Radeon8500 , on Linux?) …

1366 x 768 is better resolution than 720p so it is HD. If you want to count pixels, it's actually even better than 1080i since 1080i shows the same number of pixels on the screen at the same time as 540p only 1080i has blanks between the scanlines, 540p doesn't. Wha? There aren't any "blanks". …

The Gravis "dogbone" pad that looks like the controller that came with the SNES, or the later one that looked like a Playstation controller, are probably in everyone's collection. They are classic designs that just work.
