People who use debugger-enabled builds usually are capable of not mixing their config files so please don't over-emphasize stuff like that.

Yes they are different afaict (like the rate= setting previously for [mixer] and [sblaster] specified independent settings). Can you put up a small test using a strip-down of your files?

It's a regular section but the effects are only needed for debugger output. Don't see any sort of bug that needs fixing.

Could you please add oplemu=compat to the comparison, if possible? The generating app might be interesting as well, or dro captures.

I actually stayed with the 0.72 version from that site, because of the menu. Fine. Unofficial builds are not supported any way.

Please don't use 0.72 for comparison but only 0.73 with the =old setting. Several bugs have been fixed in 0.73.

I had to use the 48000 mixer rate in DOSbox, due to instability when specifying 49716. What instability? Try high fixed cycles and record stuff then, even if it sounds choppy the recording should be ok.

No problem, maybe we can somehow rule out (add at the dosbox side) the DAC and later effects, getting closer to what may cause the differences.

a DOSBox bug seems the most economic hypothesis explaining the problem. 😀 I've checked a dro cap in Cozendey's emulator and that end-of-intro sounds like in dosbox (he's also going up to the digital part only).

The real OPL uses a "mode 2" wave, with some added harmonics. dbopl uses a pure "mode 1" wave. The pictures are nice, but useless without any explanation. If you're after the DC shift, that's been verified to not contribute to the audible quality but is notably visible in wave editors. Did you …

The kind of artifacts I'd expect from DAC would be inaccuracies near the Nyquist frequency. Assuming the analogic circuits down the way don't have an optimal bandwidth, you'd get phase shifts and equalizer-like effects, but no distortions like you have here. Feel free to fix it, but you won't get …

I can hear at least two differences which don't seem to be DA-related. I hope you'll provide proof that it's not related to any stage after the digital opl output one by actual digital comparison.
