Which autolock? Does it behave the same if you change the autolock value in your clean 0.72 dosbox.conf?

How exactly did you open it in ZA? (tcp/udp, in/outgoing) Also don't close ZA as the main service will still be running.

doesn't set the version to 6.20 as one might expect 2!=20, second part is lower version number part thus 2 But changing the output to display 02 should be possible.

google -> first entry tells you Start the game with the command "wolf3d goobers". (instead of just "wolf3d")

So real hardware does pulse the bit. Yes but the 0xaa is placed there when the bit goes up again, not before. Their detection routine is broken, but works if the last command (which could be from some other game/demo, or the default value from bootup) did return with 0xaa.
