It is absolutely recommended to install the game WITHIN dosbox. Therefore tutorials that tell otherwise are not too helpful unless it's the only way to get it working (highly unlikely).

Which website? Re-download it from dosbox.com in any case and uninstall the old version. Be sure that the readme matches what was posted above, and that the reported version number is 0.72.

colors look "inverted" and messed up Next version will have a mode that fixes this. 0.70 or 0.65 should run it fine though.

If you're going to recompile/seriously reduce functionality of the sources anyways, just search the files for "memsize".

I don't care about your joystick problems if you use an ancient dosbox version. Your problem. And next time (if any) post full system specs including dosbox configuration.

Two possibilities: 1) don't run vista 2) don't press ctrl-alt-delete

Perhaps the changes in the config file parser did not made it yet into the config file writer. It works just fine. Remove all old mapper.txt and dosbox configuration files, check out a clean cvs source tree and compile that (it looks like you have old source files merged into your cvs tree).
