I assume that, but didn't check it yet, suppose a rather early call checks for dpb or bpb presence and fails (that is not only for 4408).

cdroms don't have/provide the drive parameter block, thus this function fails with invalid function returncode.

There is no difference between dosbox 0.72 and dosbox 0.72, only if you got the latter version from an unknown/non-official source.

The noioctl switch didn't work for you? (maybe along with usecd) That would be odd as it's using the SDL cdrom layer then, which doesn't provide much but at least cd audio capabilities.

I think that ioctl call should directly go to the cdrom driver, not through mscdex/sapuxdex/whatever.

as I wrote a little TSR that modifies the return value of 21/4408 to always be 1 (fixed) That does not mean this call is the issue.

The only reason would be compatibility, of course. So what with games/installers that need the removability setting to detect if the device is a cdrom? There goes your compatibility idea.

maybe CD drives really should be considered as fixed by this DOS service Well my mscdex says otherwise, and i don't see a reason why a removable device shouldn't be reported as such.

For me there's a keyboard entry (-> mapper), but anyways i neither like the mapper being removed from the standard shortcut nor it being added in a submenu. But well.
