Well we're not aiming at pentium+ compatibility at the moment ;) I'd like to have a #define that switches between 386/486/pentium (different flags behaviour, pagefault privileges, instruction differences) but Qbix didn't like it too much so the aim is to run everything <586. The rdtsc-requiring game …

There shouldn't be any 486+ instructions missing that are used by games/demos, think one or two games don't work because of the missing rdtsc.

For the mounting you can use any non-8.3 style, but you have to use quotes if there are spaces in it.

The correct way to identify whether cpuid is present or not is to see if that ID-bit can be toggled. Under dosbox it can't (it's always set) so it behaves like 386s and early 486s, which is just fine for the games that dosbox targets at.

No idea why cpuid is present at all, maybe some game crashed otherwise. What do you need that for?

I was not crazy That's yet to prove 😉 Thanks for reporting this, the fix from Qbix should be fine (it only happens when the scaler resetting takes place before the vga system has been initialized for the first time).

The old version of Ghost we own (2002 with a boot disk) is intended to run in real mode Ok but dosbox is DEFINITELY not the thing to use for such stuff, its aim are games, not fail-safeness and usability for backup systems.

Please post your exact mounting. The paths in z.cfg must be relative to the mounting.

Well you also indicated that Ghost dies IN dosbox, which doesn't make too much sense. Guess you mean that Ghost dies during the backup process when dosbox is active, right? What about 0.70? Does it work there?
