I heard about this problem, but didn't encounter it. In fact, I was surprised that it "just worked", and mentioned this during one of my tutorial video. What DDO are you using? i am going to buy only a 8gb cf(or sd) card for a 486 rig, so there shouldn't be any problems right? and does it work …

since 486 boards can only handle <8gb hdds, which are a bit difficult to find, i plan to use an ide to sd card converter as a hdd. i wonder if it would be too slow for a 486 rig if i use a class4 sd card?

i would like to know the maximum lba bits that the intel 82371fb/sb/ab/eb southbridges can support. that is, the largest harddisk size they can support with optimum bios? some boards with ich2 southbridge claim to support lba48, thats a lot of blocks.

Actually early programs that use floating point calculations embed an software emulation layer for the case that that there is no FPU present. So the programs works even if you don't have an FPU. It is also possible to load TSRs that do this emulation or use Windows 3.x which brings it's own FPU …

i don't know of any. all intel and most amd(8kb cache) have locked multiplier. amd enhanced 486dx2/dx4(16kb) can run at 2x and 3x. amd5x86 can run at 3x and 4x.

are there any games that are fpu-intensive, yet would run with 486dx or 387? i know quake is one of them, but its released in 1996 are are there earlier ones? well we know doom and build engines don't use much fpu, if any.

Are there DOS games requiring Pentium? Sure lots. Tomb Raider and Quake come to mind. While they "run" on a 486, they are quite slow without Pentium. I am quite sure there are also games that require 16MB of RAM as well. No idea about high color/true color in DOS games. quake also came to my mind …

most socket370 boards work well in windows98, but if you want an isa soundcard for dos games then there are only two options left: intel 440bx and via 694.

there may be a slight difference, as agp2x still has 4 times transfer rate of pci although voodoo3 doesn't support agp texturing. but really, it won't have much impact.

according to the data list the 430vx seems to support up to 512kb l2 cache, 8big tag, and only write back mode(which takes a tag bit). so it appears to have only 32mb cacheable with 256kb l2, and 64mb with 512kb l2. did i get it wrong?

os is windows98 only, with the built-in bootmenu enabled. i want to load emm386 when i choose "5.command prompt only" as some old games requires ems to run, but not when i choose "1.normal", is there anyway to do that in config.sys?
