Re: Confessions of a compulsive hoarder...

Yea I also have everything neatly organised. Cards go in anti-static bags and in labelled containers. I can find whatever I need in very little time. Apart from the Super Socket 7 machine and the capture PC, everything else is on a test bench setup. So it is very quick to pack up everything and put …

Re: Ultimate DirectX-9 Setup

Just installed Fallout 3 and Crysis on my main W8.1 machine with an i7 and GTX660. Had anyone got good experience with Alchemy for Creative cards and done comparisons with the Headphone surround technology? I really would like to know if Alchemy is a 100% substitute for Windows XP and EAX. Will let …

Re: Ultimate DirectX-9 Setup

Interesting. I have a GTX660 and could try those games. I have the Steam version of these games. It would be under W8.1 64 however as I don't have a XP machine currently. Loved Grid and playing Grid 2 on the PS3. Great game. The 4890 was a beast back in the day that's for sure. I only had the 4850 …

Re: Ultimate DirectX-9 Setup

That's really interesting and I wonder if any hardware site has done an investigation into this. It makes sense to optimize for the new games of course. Personally a single 285 would be all I need. Although a GTS250 1GB will likely be easier to source and might even be more compatible.

Re: Ultimate DirectX-9 Setup

And what about newer cards like the 480/580/680/780? Are there game-breaking DX9 bugs in the driver? I checked and my GTX660 still has drivers for Windows XP. It's quite a powerful card, on the level of a 580 and just needs a single PCIe power plug. Together with a basic S1154 or 1155 Pentium CPU …

Re: Confessions of a compulsive hoarder...

I wanted to do another video last night but half-way through I thought "what the heck are you doing, (almost) nobody cares about this stuff" and stopped. I might do a different strategy. Pick a game that I want to play, put together a setup using the "best" parts and finish that game. Then move onto …

Re: Phil's "Playing GOG.com games on your MS-DOS Gaming PC" Thread

in DOS
I don't think I will find the time again to make more videos. So I will just make brief updates whenever I have a spare minute :blah: Took me a while to get Battle Isle 2 going, but here are the steps for the GOG.com Battle Isle Platinum pack. BI, Moon, Desert and HL are easy. You just need to copy …

Re: Confessions of a compulsive hoarder...

Although I don't hoard, the hobby is a black hole for time. When you haven't been near your retro gear for a while it takes me ages to get back into it, figure out the jumper settings and all of that. And you always run into a glitch that takes hours to fix. I have basically not played any games, …

Re: Problem installing Quake

in DOS
Well turns out the disc is for the Amiga?????? What the heck... Will contact the seller and see what's going on. Page said PC Game: Quake.

Problem installing Quake

in DOS
Retro gaming at its finest :) Got some time, wanted to try GLQuake and do some benchmarking and got a copy of Quake from eBay. However I can't figure out how to install it :blah: Under Windows 95 it tells me the executables are for DOS. Under DOS 7.0 I get this error message: http://i.imgur.com/ …

Re: Ideal Voodoo 2 SLI configuration?

I think another question to ask as well is what system should one use for the "ideal" Voodoo 2 SLI configuration? A regular Voodoo scales with a Pentium from 100 to 200 MHz. So a Voodoo 2 definitely needs something faster. A Pentium III is a good platform, for SLI a high clock speed, like 700 - …

Re: Ultimate DirectX-9 Setup

I feel that a pure DX9 card is too slow for some games. A 7900GTX is very powerful, but games like Doom 3, Farcry with HDR and FEAR will dip under 60 fps at 1600 x 1200 with some AA. I believe the 8800GTX (and 8800GT + rebrands) are just as compatible with this games but offer much higher …
