Now with SoftMPU working so well I can also highly recommend the AWE64 Gold in combination with external Roland modules. Great all round card and bug free MPU interface. Weaknesses are lock of OPL3 and SB Pro but not a bid deal when you have Roland MIDI gear.

I have the same board in my Time-Machine :) It is very good. The ONLY downside I could find is being unable to disable ACPI. This means IRQ2/9 is taken and you will get a conflict with a Roland MPU401AT in combination with a PCI Sata controller. I use a K6-III in my chip with FSB running at 66 MHz. …

Yes you will have issues. Use super fdisk to create a single 30GB partition and then install Windows 98.

You basically turn a spare PC into a "fake" MT-32. Nothing more, nothing less :) I totally agree it doesn't make a lot of sense as, like you said, might as well go with DOSBox anyway or just purchase a real MT-32 which should be cheaper than having a second PC tied up. Try a PCI storage controller card. Also try disabling the onboard IDE and FDD ports. I had this issue with a Silicon Image PCI controller card. Would also stick at this point. A promise card continued to boot just fine 😀

Having tested heaps of gear I can also vouch for PCI controllers. I went with SATA though and notebook HDD :) Just keep in mind partition size limitations. I use a single 30GB FAT32 partition on a 320GB drive without any problems. You might have to use special tools like super fdisk to partition …

I had two XR385 failing so I also just got an external Yamaha. I think it'a a MU-80. The external stuff is just built a lot better I think.

DOSBox records at whatever resolution the game runs at. DOS games usually run at 320 x 200 resolution and that is exactly what you get. The whole "16:9" is because LCDs have square pixels whereas on a CRT you could stretch the image vertically. So what aspect correct does is scale the image to a 4:3 …
