I gave two PAS16 and both have a constant hiss, but otherwise they are very quiet. How is the card in another machine?

I agree about Farcry. If you are picky about constant 60 FPS and want to play with HDR and at Full HD that game is quite demanding. I would definitely go for at least Core 2 Duo with a powerful graphics card like a 8800GT or even faster.

I am impressed by the programming skills. You obviously know your stuff 😀 I personally would prefer less menus and larger game screen but that's just me. This game seems suitable for phones. Have you looked into developing for phones?

Many games will work but not all of them. The Creative cards don't have the intelligent mode compatibility which stops some games from working correctly. But for many Sierra games at least there are patches to get around this 😀 Then you have the issue of hanging note bugs as well.

Lower voltage makes it turn slower. My main tip for quiet fans is decoupling them with rubber things because vibrations are often the main source of noise. Larger fans usually are quieter compared to little squirrel fans. This is because they can spin a lot slower and push more air.

Hmm if it created a BAT file then there should be command line parameters for MAIN.EXE. There is also INTRO.EXE in the GOG.com version but that's about it. Yes missing installers, missing expansion packs or other surprises (CD version of the game / floppy version) are common with GOG.com releases. …

I just got it from GOG.com and it doesn't have an INSTALL or SETUP file just like in Wing Commander.

P2/P3 would be much better IF they had mainboard cache. But no such thing. SS7 are the last boards with mainboard cache. Unless you can get PCI cache cards or something like that? Haven't come across anything yet though.

Are you sure about the "no hanging note bugs". I thought that all Creative cards (apart form the AWE) had this bug. Some less noticeable maybe... Regarding the noise it's a hit and miss. Some are better than others, but in general the early Creative cards simply are noisy and there isn't much that …

You will definitely need the Windows drivers for your SB16. Pretty sure that Windows needs a driver for the MPU401 interface. But yea, this is one of the reasons I don't like to mix DOS and Windows. I always recommend dedicated machines for each tasks.
