I read another article that ages ago that NASA is having issues sourcing old computer parts. I wouldn't say they are using eBay, but they are definitely purchasing second hand parts to keep their systems running.

Yes the upgrade was done in 1999, but using old parts because that's what's compatible with the parts on the telescope. I don't think that MilSpec was the reason for using old parts, but compatibility with existing systems.

You will have to build a few other machines anyway 😀 Especially for Wing Commander 1 and 2. As simple as the solution sounds, just play Wing Commander 3 with a different video card.

A bit OT but I had a similar issue with three SB 2.0 cards. Really loud "computer thinking" noise and distant FM tunes. However in my 486 they work just fine! It's still a mystery to be honest...

I'm pretty sure that under Windows your SpeedStar would be faster because it's a Windows accelerator card. Under DOS I agree with you (no difference), but under Windows the ET4000 is a decent card, but certainly not the fastest option...
