Re: crucial memory = cas3

One board I have that has this option is a VIA chipset board. uATX with support for the P4 Tualatin 1.4 GHz and a single ISA slot. My most modern board with an ISA slot. My 440BX board is a Giabbyte one and I admit I can't remember the CL options for this one. But I do remember reporting on the CL …

Re: crucial memory = cas3

During my P3 slowdown project (disabling cache to simulate a 386) the CL speed made quite a difference. At CL1 you had a fast 386 but at CL3 it was noticeably slower. So for such a project I would recommend CL1 memory and then you can choose the timing in BIOS and have some control over the speed. I …

Re: 386DX40 vs 486SX33

I think we've become more spoilt by modern high fps games than we are looking back with rose tinted glasses. I was always a FPS whore when it came to shooters it seems  The DOS refresh rate at 320 x 200 is 70, 72 or 75 Hz I believe. I skipped the DX2 and went from a Cyrix 486DLC-40 (boy was …

Re: ATI & nvidia drivers for 1998-1999 games

Splinter Cell and the second game are known to only work on old video cards and drivers. They use weird features that no new driver has and on a modern machine the lightning is totally off 😀 Easier to source an Xbox though because that's the main platform for this game.

Re: 386DX40 vs 486SX33

I never had a problem playing Doom 1 on my 40mhz 386 back when it had first came out. You certainly shouldn't need a 486 to play it at reasonable speeds. I think this is one of those case were our memories trick us a little. I remember playing Wing Commander on a 286 with EGA and I have "it was …

Re: 386DX40 vs 486SX33

Well for Doom I would actually recommend a 486DX2-66 as minimum. It really starts to fly on a 486DX4-100 and runs perfect on a Pentium. MK I have no idea. A tune 386DX40 performs ~ on the level of a 486DX-25. So that SX33 would be slightly faster. IMO if you go for a 486 I wouldn't get anything but …

Re: New enough to be old?

Good point there sgt76. I also remember whenever a new game / engine came out you had to upgrade your PC. These days, maybe thanks to the consoles, but also because of the resolution ceiling of 1920 x 1080, a new games comes out (like Crysis 2, Bioshock 2, Battlefield 3) and it works just fine on …

Re: how im portant is being period-specific?

I'm like you, I like to build hybrid machines. As you say, new ATX cases are good looking and easy to work with. Modern ATX power supplies are quiet and stable and CF cards are also silent and a joy to work with. I also prefer an optical mouse and a LCD screen over CRT. I do have a real Acer 486 …
