Install the windows drivers under plain dos, install screens as follows will take you to the selection of the type of the sound card(sb16, sb pro, and so on...), just hit "skip", and it should be ok.

I have myself a 486-DX4 100MHz, 20mb RAM 700mb HD with DOS 6.22, WIN 3.11, Sounbblaster 16 and a PCI 1mb Trident. It runs all of my old games like you said, the way they were meant to run...
