So much for my boxed MSI collection. Is there any way to fix this? Maybe strip the pad off a dead AGP board and glue it with a very thin layer of JB Weld or other epoxy?

Ran Quake III timedemo and PCMark, so the red card appears to function. I'm going to put the proper MSI heatsink on now. For the memory heat transfer pads, do you put paste on them?

I'll let you in on a little secret, the TI 486SXL will run at 2x if you limit the FSB to not greater than 20 MHz. So you can use a 40 MHz crystal and set the SXL into clock double mode. I did find the spec sheet previously and saw the "Absolute Maximum" Vcore setting of 1.75 V, but it seems like it is awefully high. It wasn't clear if 1.75 V was OK for sustained use. Most (all?) chipsets cannot be run faster than some threshold. PCB design also takes into consideration operating frequency.

So there weren't any memory expansion connectors on the VLB variants? That is really too bad. Its also surprising that ATI had the expansion connectors on the ISA PCBs.

A 1.1GHz Coppermine should work without any mods at all. You just need a Coppermine compatible slotket, my personal favourite is the MSI MS-6905 Master. There might be some cosmetic errors at POST due to the BIOS not recognizing the CPU though, which can be fixed by patching in the correct …
