I've had wire inside the cable break, which wasn't obvious from the outside. I also wonder if there is an IRQ conflict. Have you tried using a known working serial mouse on the same computer? Did you try the mouse.com utility?

It was widely available at one point in time because I ordered a pair of them online and received two with consecutive serial numbers. But for some reason, they are hardish to find these days, so I'm guessing not a whole lot were produced.

In that case, I wouldn't mind seeing a comparison of the UMC U5S-40 versus these fast 386's: TI 486SXL2 50-80 MHz , DRx2-66, and IBM DLC3 66-100 MHz. It would be interesting to see where the meeting point is.

I don't think I've ever seen this before: "AIRFLOW REQ'D" Neat! Actually, before you posted that, I didn't know there were non-5x86 or non-6x86 SGS-Thomson 486DX chips. I remember reading that their quality standards were a fair bit worse than even Cyrix's.

For the missing resistor pack, i just use a bent wire between the slots. If I recall correctly, the Am5x86 requirement is to have the outermost socket with pins 1&2 shorted, pins 3&4 shorted, 5&6 shorted, and 7&8 shorted. I'll have to check my physical board though.

It looks like you have a UV erasable BIOS (EPROM). You need an EEPROM to flash the BIOS. My MS-4144 has a newer PCB revision and I like to use the AWARD version of the BIOS because it can be moddified to allow for PS/2 mouse support. I use 1024K in my board. I actually gave up on Write-Back cache. It was unreliable and also 'Anonymous coward' mentioned that WB does not work properly with VLB in general. WB seems to work with the Asus VL/I-486SV2GX4 and the Am5x86-133 when the BIOS is updated. I also noted that the mod with 3V CR2032 doesn't always work …
