Attached are the reports for my Gateway 2000 system - 1 GHz Orion slot A. It says my Matrox G400 max is running at AGP 1x. Is this correct? The G400 runs at 2x or 4x. I wonder if the Gateway BIOS is reducing the rate for some reason? Where do I view the UDMA transfer rate that the ATAPI DVD-ROM …

My only iteration is with the cashier at the grocery store. EDIT: Were there not any Socket A to Slot A adapters? That way we could run a 1.4 GHz Thunderbird on our Slot A boards.

If it worked, bad plastic or not, it is worth a lot due to the rarity. It could be a burned cache chip too, that could prevent boot on any Slot cpu. I would risk opening it.. but that is just me. On Thunderbird Slot A CPUs, the cache is integrated onto the CPU die, unlike the Orion Slot A's which …

The thermal pad theory is a plausible one. At this time AMD didn't have a reliable thermal protection circuit in their CPUs. I'm going to put the bezel into the whittening booth this evening. When I removed the Athlon and Win98 case stickers, you could really see how yellow the case was. Only concern is that the hydrogen peroxide removes the Gateway logo and the SELECT sticker. I retro-brighted the same Gateway front …

Thanks for the additional information. I guess my concern with ripping off the cover is: what’s the collection value of a defective, but in good visible condition, slot A 1 GHz thunderbird? Seems like CPU collectors aren’t concerned much with working samples.

Gateway sold this system with Thunderbird core CPUs, so they probably felt it was probably official in their book. The 1 GHz Orion consumes around 10 W more than the Thunderbird, so the issue isn't likely to be a power issue. I suppose I should have also pointed out that when I received the …
