For my interests, you need to be able to use and tests rare chips for them to be of any interest. So I was wondering if the buyer was someone who has a motherboard for it, or is one of those die hard CPU collectors.

Seems that this number varies because of how some BIOSes interpret what a kilobyte is (e.g. 1KB = 1000 bytes, or 1KB = 1024 bytes). Many of the AWARD 486 BIOSes have a TAG width option of 7+1 dirty, or 8+0. At least one manual I read recommends 7+1 when using L2 write-back, and 8+0 for write-through. You think if I use 8+0 with, say, only 512K I can cache all 256 MB?

I tested more than 256 MB of RAM on a Biostar MB-8433UUD v3.0 and any amount greater than 256 MB does not get reported. Also, two sticks of 128 MB will show up as 256 MB only if the SIMM modules are not placed adjacent to each other. So, only these combinations with modules inserted in: SIMM1 & …

+2 Replace those tantalum caps and remove that battery. I have found that tantalum caps on some older boards short themselves out; If you run the capacitor (power on) with the short, it can explode and catch fire.

I recall user Vetz running a POD at 100 MHz in his Asus VL/I-486SV2GX4; don't recall if the POD is in WB or WT mode, though. Obviously, the older the motherboard, the more exotic it would be to have the POD working in WB mode.

Here's a fun fact. Did you know that the Intel Mercury chipset, the one for the P60/P66 also doesn't work properly in WB mode? At least Intel issued some kind of statement recommending that all of their vendors run WT mode because the WB mode was defective. Not sure if it affects some, most or all …
