Various programs usually will inform you what state the L1 cache is in. The BIOS may or may not mis-report it. Try CHKCPU 16-bit, for example, or cachechk. Perhaps CTCM and CTCM7. I suspect, though, that sometimes the system tries to put the L1 in write-back mode, but the system is just horribly …

Looks to me like the motherboard manufacturer may have been trying to cut costs. I would pay a little more for a quality brand name board.

If you add another zero, you could probably get one of the CPU collectors to sell it to you. And depending on the collector, you may still be refused outright at any price.

How do you tell the difference by visual inspection if the ATI Rage 128 GL is for Mac or PC? I almost never see anyone with the PC version of the 128 GL PCI. What does that sticker on the BIOS say? Is that what gives it away?

I think the best thing to do is play out various outcomes in your mind. If you go with a less costly early Pentium build, try to image yourself using it for a month or two. Sorry, I meant to write "chipset datasheets", not "chipsets". Doesn't matter anyway, though, as the chipset is ALi. But, we also don't have the datasheets for that ALi chipset either.

Did you ever physically see one for sale? I'm skeptical of advertisements. It could be that you go to order the chip from whatever store front and the store cannot get ahold of them either. Or may be you order a K5-PR200 and what you get is a K6-PR200.

What would such a chip cost... 200$? It would depending on the bidder and how well advertised the auction was. Recently, people were willing to pay north of $500 for a Cyrix 5x86-133/4x. Comparing the rarity of the two chips, the K5-200PR was less rare, so I suspect it would fetch in the $150-$300 …

I thought 256k 512k or a meg didn't matter it was the tag RAM that defined cacheable area. With direct-mapped cache, normally, you scale the TAG with the cache, so 1024K of cache would use 64kx8 TAG. I'm not really sure what would happen if you ran 256K of cache with a 64kx8 TAG, but I have a …
